Diagnosis and treatment of MS has come a long way in the last few decades, but sadly there is still no cure and rehabilitation and support services for those living with the illness are rare.
In this area, the West Of England MS Therapy Centre, based in Nailsea outside Bristol, is the only organisation to give people with MS affordable access to a range of therapies which, by helping alleviate the symptoms and effects of their illness, can significantly improve quality of life. Founded in 1985 to offer Oxygen Therapy to people with MS the MS Therapy Centre now cares for some 300 people and has cared for over 1000 people in its 24 year history.
Today the Centre offers people with MS a variety of therapies including: Physiotherapy, Oxygen Therapy, Counselling, Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Acupuncture and Botox therapies and also provides an MS Clinic to help people with MS in the day to day practical issues of living with this illness. Since its inception the West Of England MS Therapy Centre has helped changed many lives of people with MS. Our aim now is to relocate and to expand to give each and every person with MS in the Greater Bristol Area access to the affordable therapies we provide, to help keep the progressive symptoms of MS at bay for as long as possible so that those affected, and their families may lead as normal a life as possible for as long as possible.

Physiotherapy
Pain is a most difficult symptom to treat effectively but Physiotherapy, acupuncture and aromatherapy can provide people with some relief or the ability to manage their pain enough to carry out normal day to day living. Retaining mobility is challenging to many people with MS, however regular ongoing treatments help people keep the use of their muscles for as long as possible helping them to keep mobile, dexterous and agile. |

Continence Advice
Continence is often one of the most difficult symptoms to discuss and one of the most distressing symptoms. Yet with specialist continence advisors that come as part of the MS clinic it is, thankfully, one of the most responsive to treatment.

Oxygen Therapy
By breathing pure oxygen under increased pressure many people find relief from their symptoms and, it is thought, some help in slowing down the progression of the illness.

Reflexology and Aromatherapy
As well as dealing with the relief of pain, other symptoms, such as fatigue, spasms and poor energy levels can be relieved by offering the range of complementary therapies including reflexology and aromatherapy.

Counselling
We can help talk people through some of the issues they may face such as depression and anxiety and through counseling. This can also help to deal with some of the more practical issues like establishing a routine and encourage ways in which they can both problem solve and continue to contribute both to their and their family’s lives.

Exercise
Our exercise classes also help with co-ordination issues as well as promoting a general sense of wellbeing. By encouraging patients to attend as often as they need we are also helping to break the pattern of isolation that can become part of their lives.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture has been in use with people with MS since the 1970’s and has a good reputation for helping to stabilize and improve symptoms associated with the disease. Benefits can include relief of pain, spasm, visual impairment, bowel incontinence.
